The government is calling on you to lose weight!

In 2025, the concept of “Weight Management Year” briefly trended on social media.
On March 9, Lei Haichao, Director of the National Health Commission, once again addressed “weight management” and stated that the three-year action plan for “Weight Management Year,” proposed last year, would continue to be implemented, aiming to promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen the prevention and control of chronic diseases.
During a press conference the following day, Zhang Wenhong, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, jokingly pointed at a reporter and said, “Someone like you with a big belly is our primary target!” This further clarified the signal that the government is taking action on weight management.
In fact, as early as 2019, the state had issued the “Healthy China Action (2019–2030),” which outlined requirements for physical fitness and balanced diets. In June 2024, the National Health Commission, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and 14 other departments jointly issued the “Implementation Plan for the ‘Weight Management Year’ Campaign,” setting clear requirements for national-level weight management initiatives across five key areas: publicity, social participation, population coverage, effectiveness evaluation, and research translation.
In 2016, China's obesity rate surpassed that of other countries for the first time, drawing attention to obesity as a major public health challenge in China. According to the “Guidelines forWeight Management (2024 Edition)” issued by the National Health Commission, if the trend of overweight populations is not effectively curbed, by 2030, the rates of overweight and obesity among adults and children in China will reach 70.5% and 31.8%, respectively, posing significant challenges to the healthcare system and national health.
It can be said that weight control in China is no longer merely a personal matter but a public health issue facing the entire society.
